Mathematics
The most important distinction of The Attic’s math program is that we recognize that logical-mathematical knowledge must be constructed by the individual learner. Therefore, Attic math values constructivist teaching, process over product, depth over breadth, and a rich and true understanding of mathematical concepts and mathematical ways of thinking.
In a concrete sense, we teach math by celebrating disequilibrium and through the use of real objects, collaboration with teachers and peers, conversations that stress questioning over answering, and the use of multiple ways of knowing (visual representations, verbal explanations, “puzzle-it-out” conversations, and equations discovered through the individual construction of understanding).
Our foremost goal is that each child leaves our program with a strong mathematical foundation and a true understanding of math. We recognize that constructing such deep knowledge takes time, and we view each child’s progression as an individual process.
